Taskwriter.com is an online task management application that aims to simplify the task management process. The application consists of a task list, calendar, archive (completed tasks) and a context menu, where you define contexts for tasks. An example of a context would be @home for a task that needs to be performed at home, @work for one that needs to be performed at work, and @phone for a phone call that needs to be placed. To define a task, users simply give the task a name, select its initial location in the list (inbox, next action, waiting for, etc.), specify whether it is a one step task or a project, give it a context and select the due date from the calendar.
The user can define custom filters such as “all my tasks” or “waiting for” to apply to their task list or to the list of archived tasks. Tasks can also be filtered by priority, project, due date or context. The user can select to hide a task until a number of days or hours before it is due to keep their task list free of clutter. There is also a Dashboard view of the task list, which shows a matrix of the outstanding tasks organized by their location (inbox, next action, etc.). The overall result is a task management tool that is very easy to use and offers some unique ways of viewing outstanding tasks.
Taskwriter.com was launched in 2007, and has undergone steady growth since launch.
Competition to Taskwriter.com comes from HiTask, which provides personal task management tools like Taskwriter and a groupware task management application for businesses. Another competitor is Todoist, which provides a similar service to Taskwriter. In addition, Todoist allows you to add hierarchies to your to-do list items and projects. Taskwriter is the easiest to use of the three applications.
The Taskwriter.com site has a very clean and uncluttered look and feel. The site is very responsive and navigation is intuitive. There is a convenient top menu bar with entries for Full Detail, Dashboard and Settings. The full detail view provides tabs for Tasks, Calendar, Archive and Define (define new context). The application is easy to use and responsive. There is no advertising displayed on the Taskwriter.com site.
Registration to the Taskwriter.com site is free and is required to maintain a task list. The registration process simply asks for email address and password. Validation of the email address is not required. A free membership at Taskwriter.com allows for an unlimited number of tasks, with up to 5 projects and 5 contexts, a maximum of 3 custom filters and does not include SSL security.
A Pro membership is available, which allows for unlimited tasks, lists, contexts, custom filters and projects. In addition SSL security is provided with the Pro plan. There is a 14-day free trial period for the Pro plan. The Pro plan costs $9 per month or $97 per year.
